The Jackdaw

The Jackdaw was a brig captained by the Assassin, Edward Kenway, which he obtained with the help of his quartermaster Adéwalé, during his time as a privateer and pirate. Upon securing it, Kenway named it Jackdaw, after the bird of the same name.

Before Kenway's captaincy, it was a ship in the Spanish Treasure Fleet named El Dorado.[1]

Procurement

The Jackdaw, a ship formerly known as the El Dorado, was a member of a Spanish treasure fleet. After Edward Kenway and Adéwalé escape from the hold of a Spanish Galleon they free numerous pirates from imprisoned abord multiple ships in the Spanish Fleet. Once the pirates are free, Kenway boards the ship and kills the remaing Spanish soldiers aboard. Kenway, using the pirates he freed, sails the ship out of the fleet under the cover of a hurricane. The pursuing ships are sunk in the storm and the Jackdaw is freed.

Schematics

The Jackdaw was 60 meters long, 48.5 meters high, had a width of 11.9 meters, and had 26 sails. Accompanying this, the Jackdaw initially had six cannons with additional slots for another fifty,[2] and could employ additional upgrades such as four swivel guns, explosive mines, round shot, heated shot, chain shot, mortars, and naval rams.[3] It was also equipped with a diving bell for when Edward explored the seafloor.[4]

The Jackdaw was also fitted with a rowboat. The rowboat was equppied with harpoons that Kenway used for hunting whales and sharks

Trivia

  • Like many other references to the Assassin Order involving avians, a jackdaw is a small, black bird belonging to the crow family. Coincidentally, the color of the bird's feathers themselves could also be a reference to piracy often being symbolized by black.
  • Darby McDevitt mentioned the Jackdaw's name was also a reference to the fable of the Eagle and the Jackdaw.[5]
  • The former name of the ship, El Dorado, is Spanish for "the gilded one; the golden".
