Iraq is a country in the Middle East, bordering Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria.[1]
With the fertile plains between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, Iraq's history can be dated back to as early as the 6th millennium BCE Mesopotamia.[1] Following a Muslim conquest, and the establishment of the Abbasid Caliphate, the region saw rapid development into a center not only of culture, but also of trade and politics.[2] The destruction of the capital city of Baghdad by the Mongol Empire led to a decline that lasted many centuries. Modern Iraq dates to 1920, with the creation of Mandatory Iraq, which lasted until 1932, when Iraq gained independence from the United Kingdom. The then-newly-established Kingdom of Iraq, would be overthrown in 1958 and the Iraqi Republic created.[1]
History
In 1936,[3] a group of archaeologists in an Iraqi digging site uncovered an Isu artifact they named Baghdad Battery, though their function would remain a mystery for many decades.[4]
In 2003, as part of the greater "War on Terror", the United States invaded Iraq. The Iraq War had been planned by the Templar Order as early as December 2000, who expected that their puppet, George W. Bush, would restart U.S-Iraq animosities and, therefore, provide work for Dick Cheney's military contractors.[5] The war toppled the government of Saddam Hussein and American occupation lasted until 2011.[6]
