Hyenas in Egypt

Hyenas are a species of feliform mammals endemic throughout Africa, western Asia, and India.

History

431 - 404 BCE

During the Peloponnesian War in Greece hyenas were not a common sight. The exception to this was the legendary Krokottas Hyena, who haunted the Skandeia Bay of the Kythera Island, until the Spartan misthios Kassandra hunted it down and slew it.

1st century BCE

In the 1st century BCE, hyena ears were in demand in Egyptian markets. In addtion, Khaliset, a member of the Order of the Ancients who used the Hyena as her cryptonym, used hyenas to do her bidding.
