Giotto di Bondone (1266 or 1267 – 8 January 1337), known as Giotto, was an Italian painter and architect, considered the first of the great artists contributing to the Renaissance.

Giotto painted frescos in the chapels of the Basilica of Santa Croce. In 1334, he was appointed chief architect of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, designing its bell tower, known as Giotto's Campanile. The Campanile would only be finished after Giotto's death, and the architect Francesco Talenti deviated from the original design.
