Ebels (died 886) was a Frankish high-ranking warrior, who was a brother to fellow warrior and priest, Gozlin. A member of the religious zealotical Bellatores Dei, he was known to the populace as an executioner and leader of the Frankish armies.[1]
Biography
Although there is little known about Ebels, the zealot was known for his notoriety as a part of a brother-warriors duo alongside Gozlin. During his time, Ebels was seen to be more blood-thirsty and more prone to violence, in comparison to his brother.[1]
The Siege of Paris
When the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan arrived in Paris for the impending siege, Eivor had to prepare her allies and their armies for the battle. As Eivor helped Sigfred placing their catapults at Defender's Rest, both Vikings took notice of a public execution. Sigfred noted that the dead man walking was brought before both Gozlin and Ebels to be killed for a random sin against their God or their king. Eivor and Sigfred watched as Gozlin spoke to the public of the reasoning for the execution. However, Ebels, impatient, swung his axe and killed the man quick as Eivor and Sigfred soon left from afar.[1]
Death
After she completed the siege preparations, Eivor joined both Sigfred and Toka Sinricsdottir for the siege on Paris. With both sides losing warriors, Eivor and her allies made it through to the entrance of the Île de la Cité. Behind the entrance's gates, Ebels, alongside Count Odo of France and Gozlin, awaited the Vikings. Odo left Gozlin and Ebels to face the incoming opposition. Both sides halted as Gozlin prayed and stated aloud that their God was on their side for victory. As Sigfred replied back with his own saying, Ebels signaled Gozlin to leave as he guarded the gates with his soldiers. Sigfred gave Eivor a nod as Eivor fought against Ebels to enter. A battle ensued and Eivor proved victorious, as Eivor killed Ebels in combat. With Ebels dead, the Vikings broke through the gates and officially started the siege.[2]
