Shay aiming his air rifle

The air rifle was a prototype ranged weapon utilized by the Assassin-turned-Templar Shay Cormac, during the 18th century.

A prototype weapon developed by the Templars, the air rifle propelled projectiles by means of compressed air, in contrast to widespread flintlock pistols and muskets, which used a propellant charge. While incapable of firing bullets like other firearms, it was used as a diversionary weapon, through its primary capability of firing a variety of darts (more specifically, sleep, berserk and firecracker darts) similar to the blowpipes utilized by Assassins.

In 1756, Shay outfitted the rifle with the prototype Grenade launcher constructed by Benjamin Franklin, which granted the weapon more lethal capabilities by means of firing different types of grenades, (more specifically shrapnel, sleep and berserk grenades).

Shay's air rifle would eventually be passed down to his son and grandson, both of whom he trained to use alongside teaching them how to utilize Freerunning and Eagle Vision.

Trivia

  • In the cinematic trailer for Assassin's Creed: Rogue, Shay wears the rifle on his back in a more realistic manner (with the butt above his shoulder), but in the actual game, he unrealistically wears it with the barrel above his shoulder.
    • Also, in the cinematic trailer, when Shay fires it, a loud "BANG" is heard.
