The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly called as the Duomo, was the largest cathedral of Florence. It was here, in 1478, that Lorenzo de' Medici and his brother, Giuliano de' Medici, whilst attending High Mass, were attacked during the outbreak of the Pazzi Conspiracy. At the time, construction of the basilica was for the most part, complete, though the front face was yet to be finished.
In the lanterna atop its dome stood the sarcophagus of the assassinIltani along with her seal, poison, and alongside the basilica stood Giotto's Campanile.
