The classic pirate flag is a black ensign with a skull and crossbones, although various designs existed and some were blood red instead of black. The term Jolly Roger was popularized by Charles Johnson's "A History of the Pyrates", but it could also be known as the Death's Head, Old Roger, or the Black Flag. The fearsome design encouraged merchant ships to surrender without a fight.
