You mentioned ninja as one of the possible enemies. That's interesting because, around my town, I always hear my friends say the Assassins would be ninja and Templars the samurai (yes, I live in a town of AC fans). Historically speaking, that idea wouldn't make the most sense because most ninja were mercenaries. As such, they worked for various groups, most commonly, Daimyo. Often, ninja and samurai would work together because of that. I like that your idea takes that into account.

On a side note, I'm pro- chain sickle or kusarigama as FTGM mentioned in Answeration's recent blog.
