Bede (Old English: Bæda; c. 673 – 735), also called Bede the Venerable, was an English monk and scribe from Northumbria.[1]

Biography

During his life, Bede wrote extensively on a number of different topics, such as politics,[2] history[1] and etymology.[3][4] A number of his teachings were preserved at the Malmesbury and Readingum Abbey.[5] Regarding the city of Winchester, Bede wrote that it was named Uintancaestir by the Saxons, meaning "the Walled City of Uenta."[3]
