Battle of Fort Necessity

The Battle of Fort Necessity was one of the opening battles of the Seven Years' War.
History
In 1754, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington and a group of Virginia militia were sent to the head of the Ohio River valley, a contested territory between the British colonists and the French. Washington and his troops attacked a French patrol at Jumonville Glen,[1] without provocation.[2]
Washington expected a return attack and had his troops build a palisade wall surrounding their supplies—a "Fort of Necessity". Supplies ran low, and the militia as well as their British Regular reinforcements were quickly overwhelmed. On 4 July, Washington surrendered to the French and was allowed to retreat,[1] but signed a document saying their commander had been "assassinated".[2]
