Samuel Maran was a French apothecary working and living in Paris during the late 18th century. He was a competitor of Madame Beaudry, who frequently purchased tonics from him, only to dilute and re-sell them en masse at cheaper prices for profit.[1]

After confronting the madame numerous times over her practices, Maran resolved to kill her, and tricked her into drinking poison, which he disguised as a new tonic. The French Assassin Arno Dorian later investigated the crime and arrested Maran after correctly identifying him as the culprit.[1]
