On 17 July 756, the jiedushi An Lushan and his rebel army captured the Tang capital of Chang'an, a few days after Tang Emperor Xuanzong fled from the city along with a royal entourage comprising of the Crown Prince, Yang Guefei, his most trusted officials and several members of the Golden Turtles.

For three days and nights, the rebel army occupied and plundered the city, killing many of the citizens within the city walls. An Lushan's admiral, Sun Xiaozhe, slaughtered many members of the royal family, including the eldest Princess, the Empress, the Prince Consort, and many more at Chongren District in honor of An Lushan's son, An Qingzong, who was executed by the Tang a year earlier.[1]
