Sword of Fathoms

The Sword of Fathoms was a katana inspired by the Critical Role web series. It was modded into the Animus EGO and included as part of Fujibayashi Naoe's arsenal during a session where a user relived her genetic memories.[1]

Behind the scenes
A Sword of Fathoms is the name for a series of falchions from the American web series Critical Role's second campaign, in which they are all manifestations of the pact a warlock-class character makes with the undersea leviathan Uk'otoa for it to be their patron. They are not magical themselves but can absorb magical weapons and replicate their powers, although every successive absorption gradually relinquishes older items to the sea beast and prevents wielders from calling upon past skills.[2]
Despite it visually adhering to how true falchions are made for one-handed use, Critical Role treats it like a heavy weapon, specifically a greatsword, in accordance with the rules from Dungeon & Dragons' fifth edition supplementary sourcebook Explorer's Guide to Wildemount.[2] Continuing this misrepresentation, the weapon as Ubisoft depicts it in the 2025 video game Assassin's Creed: Shadows is just a skin that reuses katana animations even though this slashing weapon is improperly designed and unbalanced to be handled in the ways that various kobudō would require of it.
