The pirate hunter Robert Maynard was a British Royal Navy officer who made his name in the Indies at the turn of the 18th century.
Born in Dartford, Kent on 19 September 1684, Maynard spent an unremarkable childhood before joining the English Navy. He was made a lieutenant in 1707 at the age of 23, and was later tasked with hunting down and capturing the pirate Edward Thatch, known as "Blackbeard". For months Maynard dogged Blackbeard across the West Indies, and finally lured him into attacking his ship off the coast of North Carolina. After allowing him to board his ship, Maynard struck Blackbeard down and killed him, againt the efforts of his pirate consort Edward Kenway.
Expecting to be rewarded for his success with promotion to Captain, Maynard was nevertheless overlooked by the British authorities. In determined fury, he then launched a campaign of extermination against all pirates throughout the West Indies, beginning with Kenway.
To that end Maynard began building an armada, and manipulated Kenway into pursuing him. Ruthless to a fault, he sacrificed his own treasurer, letting Kenway find and kill him in order to lure the pirate into a trap in his villa at Tortuga, which Kenway and his crew barely escaped.
Allowing Kenway to believe he was vulnerable, Maynard lured him to the former pirate capital of Port Royal. While Kenway was again tempted away from his crew by the hope of gold, Maynard captured his officers and imprisoned them on his newly built warship. He then fled Port Royal while bombarding the city with mortar fire.
Kenway gave chase. Maynard was forced to face him finally in hand to hand combat on the deck of his own ship, and was defeated. He survived only by throwing the key to the hold in which Kenway's officers were imprisoned into the sea, and escaping while the pirate retrieved it.
Having failed to stop Kenway and without his armada, Maynard was again overlooked for promotion. He returned to England where he lived off the fame of Blackbeard's defeat, fading slowly into obscurity. He died of natural causes in his home county of Kent at the age of 65.
