The Abbasid Revolution was the rebellion which overthrew Umayyad dynastic rule of the Arabian empire, inaugurating the Abbasid Caliphate.[2] Dissatisfied with the Umayyad government's treatment of its non-Arab citizens, descendants of Prophet Muhammad's uncle Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib led regiments of Arab dissenting soldiers to march on the Umayyad capital of Damascus.[3]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The survivors of the revolution, including Umayyad prince Abd al-Rahman I, were driven west and established themselves in the Iberian Peninsula, founding the Emirate of Córdoba.[4]
