Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians (c. 870 – 918) was Queen of Mercia from 911 until her death. She was the daughter of King Alfred of Wessex and Lady Ealhswith.
Biography
As a child, Æthelflæd was admired by the boy Esobert, who decided to prove his love to Æthelflæd by climbing a tower to retrieve a flower. With assistance from the passing Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, Esobert retrieved the flower and gave it to the princess as she went for a walk with her mother. The queen amusingly humored the boy's intention to marry Æthelflæd, and then the two royals retired indoors.[1]
