Ælla (died 867) was King of Northumbria until his death in 867. He was responsible for capturing the Viking leader Ragnar Lodbrok and had him killed by being thrown him into a pit of snakes. In retaliation, two of Ragnar's sons, Ivarr the Boneless and Ubba Ragnarsson, sought revenge and invaded England leading the Great Heathen Army. In time, the sons captured Ælla and ritually executed him by way of the blood eagle.[1]
