Áed Findliath (died 879) was the King of Ailech from 855 and High King of Ireland from 862 to his death in 879.
Biography
Áed Finnliath ascended the throne of High King in 862 following the death of his uncle Máel Sechnaill, resulting in the shifting of power to the Northern Uí Néill. Early in his reign, Áed worked to put a halt to the fighting between the Irish kingdoms and unite them against the invading Vikings from Scandinavia. In 866, he was able to drive out the Vikings out of the northern region of Ulster which, however, led to the power struggle for control over the region amongst the Irish kingdoms. Áed also had close ties with Bárid mac Ímair, the King of Dublin.[1]
Áed died in 879, and the High-Kingship was thus passed over to his first cousin Flann Sinna,[1] while his sons Domnall and Niall inherited the kingship of Ailech.[2]
