York, also known as Eoforwic during the Anglo-Saxon period, is a city located in North Yorkshire, England. The city served as the capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria during the early Middle Ages, until its conquest by the Vikings in 866. During this period, the city was renamed Jórvík.

York was originally founded as a town named Eboracum during the Roman occupation of Great Britain.
