York is a city located in North Yorkshire, England. The city served as the capital of Northumbria during the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy, until its conquest by the Vikings in 866. During this period, the city was renamed Jórvík.

Trivia

  • First known as Eboracum, York was initially settled as a Roman Fortress in 71CE and eventually recovered by Anglians by the 6th century, naming the city Eoforwic.
    • When the Danes took over the city in 866, they renamed it Jorvik, which is where the name York comes from.
