York, formerly known as Jorvik, is a city and the county town of North Yorkshire , England. The city served as the capital of Northumbria during the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy, until its conquest by the Norsemen in 866. The city then became the capital of the Viking territory in England.
Trivia
- First known as Eboracum, York was initially settled as a Roman Fortress in 71CE and eventually recovered by Anglians by the 6th century, naming the city Eoforwic.
- When the Danes took over the city in 866, they renamed it Jorvik, which is where the name York comes from.
