Woden, also known as Pagan-Hole (died 870s) was a Zealot of the Order of the Ancients who operated in England during the 9th century.

Biography

Little to nothing is known about Woden's early years. As a young man, Woden was left for dead in a mass grave filled with the bodies of his fellow pagan villagers. Full of vengeance and rage, Woden climbed out of the pit and began a two-year journey of revenge, seeking the perpetrators who massacred his village. His perseverance and focus led the Order to notice and to induct him into the Zealots. Within the Order, Woden was entrusted to be a secure messenger service for the Order member, The Sickle.[1]

In his rounds, Woden patrolled the area along the roads of Cent. It was during one such patrol that he was targeted and then fatally defeated by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, who was allied with the Hidden Ones. Afterwards, Eivor uncovered a note among Woden's personal effects which mentioned the cryptonym of the Sickle in a message saying that the delivery of the "the key ingredient...for her bread" was delayed, but would be procured as soon as possible from Maeldun's Saltern Camp, along eastern Essexe. Also among his effects were his medallion and a tablet representing the Halter of Clydno Eiddyn, both of which fell into Eivor's possession.[1]

Trivia

  • Like other Zealots, Woden had unique fighting methods and gadgets in his weaponry. Upon Eivor's instigation, Woden wielded no shield, defended himself using flash grenades, attacked using multiple arrows at once, threw proximity incendiary devices, and created a ring of fire to fend off any melee attacks.
  • Woden´s name comes from the earliest known name for the god Odin, used by teutonic tribes.
