Tryggr (died 873) was the governor of Lunden during city's occupation by the Great Heathen Army during the 9th century, serving from 869 until his death.
Biography
Governor of Lunden
A Viking from Norway, Tryggr joined the Great Heathen Army during the Viking expansion into England, where he came to serve under Ubba Ragnarsson and Guthrum, becoming a close companion of the former. In 869, Tryggr was present when the Vikings occupied the city of Lunden nestled between the borders of Mercia and Wessex, which they used to launch incursions into Wessex. When both Ubba and Guthrum headed north and south to combat the kingdoms of Northumbria and Wessex respectively, Tryggr remained behind in Lunden, and became its governor some time in the early 870s.[1]
With the absence of the Viking army, Tryggr employed the use of reeves to keep the peace in the city. He first employed the Norse Erke Bodilsson, whose father Bodil Bodilsson previously served as the city's governor before his death. He then recruited Stowe, a Saxon who was raised in the Lundenwic Abbey. The two became Tryggr's right and left hand man, governing both the eastern and western sections of the city.
