Théodrate of Troyes (868 – 886) was the wife of Count Odo of Paris.
Biography
Not much is known about Théodrate's past, but from her title and role in Francia, she served as caretaker of her family and wife to Count Odo.
Siege of Paris
In 886, Théodrate sent a letter to Count Odo, at Pontem Esera, detailing his attendance at the Manoir des Fleurs Rouges, due to his responsibility to host and welcome his guests. The letter was found later by Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir, who was ordered by Elgring Clan's leader, Sigfred and his niece, Toka Sinricsdottir, to find Odo for an early truce.[2]
At the manor, Théodrate was at the main entrance and talked with Eivor, masquerading as a guest from Frisia. Théodrate admitted to be checking in guests and making sure that they have written confirmation. Eivor noted the necessary invitation and excused herself, in order to "find" one. Nevertheless, Eivor found her way inside to talk with Count Odo.[2]
Death and legacy
During the siege itself, Théodrate suffered a grave wound, which was sustained from an arrow to the belly. Théodrate was shot by an arrow during her aid for fallen Frankish soldiers and was left in the Palais de la Cité's master bedroom to rest for her injuries. The family priest, Walter Du Sens, was meant to give Théodrate her last rites, but Walter was too drunk to so.[1]
With some conversation and wine, Walter unwittingly gave Eivor access to the master bedroom, to Théodrate. From Eivor's entrance, Théodrate imagined that Eivor was the priest, conducting rites for her. Through their conversation, Théodrate was asked by Eivor to find her husband. In her last breath, Théodrate gave Eivor the keys to war room, where Odo was, before passing away.[1]
After a truce was made between King Charles the Fat and Jarl Sigfred, Count Odo stepped into the agreement afterwards and detailed how his wife, Théodrate, and his fellow brothers in arms, Gozlin and Ebels died in the name of Francia, while Charles gave in to the Vikings' onslaught. Odo soon denounced his support for the king and left in anger.[1]
Behind the scenes
Théodrate is a historical character who appeared in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's The Siege of Paris DLC.
Historically, unlike what the DLC depicted, Théodrate survived the siege and eventually went on to become Queen consort of France following her husband's election as King following the deposition of King Charles III in 888. She died in 903 around the age of 34 or 35.
