"I am no coward. In a long lost battle for Wessex, I was the victor. The scop could speak of that time. Focus on my lost honor."
―Tatfrid's dying words, 870s.[src]-[m]

Tatfrid (died 870s), also known as The Lyre, was an Anglo-Saxon musician and a Maegester of the Order of the Ancients, leading the Wardens of Wealth sect during the late 9th century. He frequented the marketplace of Grantebridge, Grantebridgescire, whether shopping or performing a solo with his lyre.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Joining the Order almost by accident, Tatfrid fought with the Norse and led an accomplished raid in Wessex. During the raid, he let three of his prisoners live. One of these prisoners happened to be Bishop Herefrith, The Crozier, who recruited him due to his combat skills and his adept leadership. With hard work and effort, Tatfrid rose to become the leader of the Wardens of Wealth.[1]

The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir first learned about The Lyre's existence and position within the Order after acquiring a clue from Wigmund, The Tang. With the help of the Viking jarlskona Soma, Eivor freed Grantebridgescire from Wigmund's influence and killed him, in the process recovering a note from the Ancient's personal effects.[2] The first clue of six, it revealed to Eivor that The Lyre spent his time browsing the market. After assassinating Patrick, The Anvil, Eivor discovered from his personal effects that The Lyre's facial features included brown hair, a goatee, and a mustache.[1]

During her journey, Eivor was directed towards Havelok, The Billhook, and assassinated him at his villa. Investigating, Eivor discovered another clue, which detailed that The Lyre was a man. Keeping on her track, Eivor also found more clues leading her to the next target, Mucel, The Lathe. Deducing his location, Eivor tracked him down and assassinated him at a dock. After his death, Eivor looked over his personal effects and read another clue revealing that The Lyre is ironically a playing musician. The next target, mentioned in Mucel's notes, was Gifle, The Ash-Spear. Locating him at a bandit camp, Eivor infiltrated it and assassinated the man. Among Gifle's personal effects, Eivor found another clue revealing that the true name of The Lyre was Tatfrid.[1]

Tatfrid assassinated by Eivor

The final clue was acquired from Bishop Herefrith, whom Eivor assassinated during a siege on Anecastre after learning about his Order affiliations and his plans to take control of Lincolnscire.[3] From Herefrith's personal effects, Eivor recovered a note revealing Tatfrid's location. She subsequently headed to the Grantebridge marketplace, where she found the Maegester and killed him, putting an end to the Wardens of Wealth's activities in England.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Tatfrid's cutscene in the Memory Corridor is quite brief, when compared to the cutscenes of other Maegesters, such as Fulke or Gorm Kjotvesson.
  • As stated, Herefrith had recruited Tatfrid within the Order. This is the second relationship that Herefrith had a part in, as the first instance was with Havelok.
