The Strait of Malacca is a narrow stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula to the northeast and the Indonesian island of Sumatra to the southwest, connecting the Andaman Sea to the South China Sea. The strait was named after the city of Malacca, the capital of the Malaysian state of the same name and the former capital of the Malacca Sultanate.[1]
History
Golden Age of Piracy
During the early 18th century, the Strait of Malacca was dominated by pirates, who would not hesitate to plunder any merchant ship that ventured through the region.[2] Mustafa, a pirate captain who would later come to be known as "Rupiya", made a name for himself by successfully attacking a number of ships over the years, gaining notoriety as the "Terror of Malacca".[3]
In 1725, the strait served as the site of a major naval battle between the Zhang Wei Union, the East India Company, and Admiral Zheng's fleet, all of which sought a Piece of Eden that had been retrieved from Burma by the Union and subsequently stolen by the Company.[4] After failing to recover the artifact, the Union members attempted to retreat, only for their enemies to give chase.[5] Fortunately, they were saved by the timely arrival of the Dutch East India Company and an allied privateer fleet, which forced both the East India Company and Zheng's fleet to abandon the pursuit.[6]
Modern times
At some point after the Zhang Wei Union recovered a Piece of Eden shaped like a crescent amulet, they disposed of the artifact at the bottom of the sea near the Strait of Malacca, where it would remain hidden for centuries. After a failed attempt by the SS Ourang Medan to recover the amulet in the 1940s, Abstergo Industries discovered the amulet's location in 2023 through the genetic memories of Edward Kenway relived by his descendant, Noa Kim.[7]
Noa was subsequently sent to retrieve the amulet from the Ourang Medan's shipwreck and was successful in his task, though the artifact's powers left him severely weakened.[8] To save his life, the Templar Shimazu Sei made a deal with the Assassin Nathan Zhang, who helped Noa, Sei, and the latter's bodyguard Yuki escape from Abstergo with the amulet.[9]
