Stavanger (Runic: ᛋᛏᛅᚠᛅᚴᚱ) is a city and municipality in the Rogaland county of Norway.
History
During the 9th century, Stavanger was home to the Raven Clan, led by King Styrbjorn Sigvaldisson. In 870, the jarl's adoptive daughter Eivor Varinsdottir, along with her fellow clan-mates Dag Nithisson and Tora Auzoux, returned to the city after thwarting one of the Wolf Clan's raids, bringing with them a prisoner, Kjotve's thrall Gull. Although Eivor hoped to present Gull to her father as tribute, Styrbjorn realized the thrall would be missed and chastised Eivor for bringing destruction and death to Stavanger.[1]
Later, while Eivor was away from Stavanger on a quest to recover a treasure Gull had told her about, the Wolf Clan attacked the city, slaughtering many residents, including Tora. Although Eivor returned in time to save her father and remaining clan-mates,[2] the Raven Clan ultimately lost Stavanger to Kjotve and his men and were forced to retreat to Fornburg.[3] The Wolf Clan would subsequently maintain control of Stavanger until their defeat and dissolution in 872.[4]
At some point in the 870s, Eivor returned to Stavanger, where she reunited with her old friend Rolf and helped him choose a commander for his raiding crew.[5] She also encountered Sulke, a merchant selling goods looted from the remains of Heillboer, Eivor's hometown, and dealt with him.[6]
