The Siege of Paris of 845 was the culmination of a Viking invasion of West Francia. The Viking forces were led by Ragnar Lothbrok.
Siege
Jarl Sten Stensson participated in the siege and fought under Ragnar, as did over 5,000 other Vikings. The Seine was filled with their 120 longships and dyed red with their battles.[1]
Aftermath
According to Sten, the Franks paid them so much silver and gold to leave that if they had been given more, their ships would have sunk.[1]
Legacy
As they sailed towards England in 866, Sten Stensson told his sons Ulf and Björn about his experiences in Francia.[1] Upon arriving in Francia in 885 to aid another siege of Paris, Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan remembered that Ragnar had sacked the city for "a fortune in silver and sorrow".[2]
