The father (died 1747) of Shay Cormac was an Irish sailor from Dublin who immigrated to New York City with the rest of his family. He was employed in the merchant marine, and tutored his son in seafaring until his untimely death during Shay's teenage years.[1]
Biography
A native of Dublin, Ireland, he and his family immigrated to the British colonies in America in the early 18th century, eventually settling down in New York.[1] There, his wife gave birth to their son Shay on 12 September[2] 1731, but died from complications shortly thereafter.[1]
Widowed, Shay's father had little time to care for his son due to his work in the merchant marine, leaving Shay to be raised by his aunt. By 1739, when Shay was eight years old, his father allowed him to join him at sea to earn his own wages. During their time at sea, they encountered pirates several times.
