Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570 BCE) was a poet from the Greek island of Lesbos known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung and accompanied by a lyre. She was counted among the Nine Lyric Poets along the likes of Bacchylides and Pindar.
Legacy
During the 5th century BCE, the school Sappho established in her home town of Mytilene was still in use.[1] Some of her works were still being kept in the Library of Alexandria in the 1st century BCE.[2]
