Rosta (died c. 856) was the mother of Eivor, a Viking who raided southern England during the 9th century.
Biography
At the age of nineteen, Rosta and her husband Varin[1] built cairns together on a high cliff near the fjord. At some point after Eivor was born, Rosta taught her how to build cairns themselves and explained to Eivor the importance of cairns as a test of mind and wit.[2]
Behind the scenes
Name etymology
The name Rosta is related to the Old Norse word rósta, meaning 'brawl, riot, strife'. It's best known as the byname of Olvir Rosta, a character in the 13th century Orkneyinga saga and thus has also been translated as 'brawler, rioter'.[3]
