History

Renaissance

During the Renaissance, the country was ruled by Manuel I, who had close ties to Spain and the Templars. He also took great interest in founding colonies in the east, such as in India.[1][2]

After learning of the Assassins being present in India as well, he sent a fleet of thirteen ships to Calicut, led by Pedro Álvares Cabral. However, the Assassins destroyed the fleet and only four ships managed to return to Portugal.[3] Manuel then sent Vasco da Gama and a fleet of 800 men to Calicut to root out the Assassins, though many of the men fell during a fierce Assassin attack, sending a clear message to Portugal and making it clear they did not accept their interference.[4][5][6]

Manuel finally ordered a lock-down in Lisbon, preventing anyone from escaping, and forced all citizens to convert to Christianity. The Assassins managed to evacuate many citizens, though they knew they could never get all of them out of the city.[7] Realizing they had to do something, they provided the citizens with weapons, armor, and basic combat training, giving them a chance to stand up against their king.[8]

In 1511, the Assassins and Templars battled for control of Lisbon. With the help of Ottoman recruits sent by Ezio Auditore, the Assassins put an end to the Templars' "missionary" expeditions to Asia, which were funded with money stolen from King Manuel.[2][9] They also eliminated the Templar sea captain Francisco,[10] and eventually expelled the Order from Lisbon, allowing them to install several Assassin Dens in the city.[11]

Age of Enlightenment

By the 18th century, the Portuguese Empire's reach had spread to the Caribbean. In 1719, the pirate Edward Kenway commandeered a Portuguese Man O' War for Bartholomew Roberts, which was later rechristened the Royal Fortune.[12]

Later, during the Seven Years' War, the Colonial Assassin Shay Cormac was sent by his Mentor Achilles Davenport to retrieve a Piece of Eden from an Isu Temple below the Carmo Convent in Lisbon, unintentionally disturbing the Temple and resulting in a devastating earthquake.[13]

After he became a Templar and captained a fleet of his own, Shay sent troop-filled ships to Lagos to help with the war effort and the Templars' own interests.[14] After their initial gambit paid off, the Templars sent a second wave of troops to consolidate their success.[15]
