Antó (1670 – unknown) was the Maroon leader of the Assassins' Bureau in Kingston.
Biography
Antó was born to the Ashanti tribe in the Akon region of West Africa in 1670. At a young age, he was sold into slavery and sent to Jamaica to work in a sugar plantation. It wasn't long, however, until he escaped with the help of a warrior Cudjoe and fled to Kingston.
Soon after, he founded a Maroon community and began to form a good reputation with local traders, and began coordinating plantation raids to free slaves and build an army. In 1698 he was inducted into the Assassin Order and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming leader of the Kingston bureau. Many of the slaves that he rescued became his recruits, and his bureau was named the Maroon Assassins.
Despite his being the bureau leader, Antó's first priority was always to free slaves from captivity.
In 1715, Antó was approached by the pirate Edward Kenway, who admitted to having sold out his bureau's location to the Templars, and wished to rectify his mistake by assisting him in exchange for a Templar key to a vault on Inagua. Antó first had Edward freed a number of Maroons before defending the bureau from the British. They the assassinated the Templar Kenneth Abraham.
By 1721, Antó was still station in Kingston when Edward returned as a member of the Assassin Brotherhood, sent to assassinate Woodes Rogers. As Rogers was hosting a party before his return to England, Antó provided him with the identity of an Italian diplomat attending the party, so Edward could assassinate him and assume his identity. Before setting off, Edward requested that Antó sent a letter to his Caroline in England.
Trivia
- Antó's name literally meant "born after the death of his father".
