Antó was born to the Ashanti tribe in the Akon region of West Africa in 1670. At a young age, he was sold into slavery and sent to Jamaica to work in a sugar plantation. It wasn't long, however, until he escaped with the help of a warrior named Kujo and fled to Kingston.
