Philip Syng Physick (7 July 1768 – 15 December 1837) was an American physician called "the father of American surgery".
In 1795, he performed the first human blood transfusion in the history of medicine. Fearing the scientific community would not be ready for such revelations, he gave his unpublished paper to his colleague and friend Benjamin Rush, who later had it preserved in the archives of Library Company of Philadelphia.[1]
Later in the 20th century, the paper was obtained by the chemist Linus Pauling, aiding him in his work on the hemoglobin structure, paving way for the triple and double helix discoveries.[1]
