The Antarctic Treaty System is a series of international agreements established to ensure Antarctica remains a peaceful, non-militarized, and environmentally protected region.[1]

Purpose

Signed in 1959 and enacted in 1961, the ATS has been ratified by 58 countries. It governs Antarctica by prohibiting territorial claims, all military activities except for peaceful purposes, resource exploitation, and hunting. The treaty ensures that the continent is used solely for scientific research and international cooperation while preventing activities such as nuclear testing or environmental harm.[1]

History

On 4 September 2012, a news articles by the Abstergo News Wire was emailed to Warren Vidic, the Animus Project head and a service subscriber. The article detailed the United States and the European Union receiving international criticism again for their decision to build jointly-owned oil platforms in the continent's Weddell Sea, a violation of the Treaty, and noted that the tense situation was further complicated by the allegedly unrelated presence of two nearby naval destroyers.[2]
