The Ospedale degli Innocenti (English: Hospital of the Innocents) is a building in Florence.
History
Origin
Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and opened in 1445, the Ospedale degli Innocenti was an orphanage for unwanted babies, being the first of its kind in Europe. During the Renaissance, unwanted babies were abandoned by their mothers in order for them to be hired by the Ospedale as a wet nurse, so she could be paid to feed her own child.[1]
At the orphanage, boys were tutored in various professions by the Ospedale's staff, while girls were usually trained to become nuns or wives.[1]
Bonfire of the Vanities
In 1497, during the reign of Girolamo Savonarola, one of Florence's lieutenants, the Doctor, was murdered at the Ospedale by the Assassin Ezio Auditore.[2]
Trivia
- A glyph is located on the building.
