Orwig Neverdeath (died 870s), was a Norse warrior fighting with Ragnar Lodbrok.
Biography
Orwig was one of Ragnar Lodbrok's most valued fighters. Being tougher than any of his peers, Ragnar bestowed upon Orwig the moniker of 'Neverdeath,' because no weapon wielded by man could harm him. As an added challenge, Ragnar bid Orwig to fight without weapons, instead wielding only shields henceforth. From then on, Orwig Neverdeath formed the center of Ragnar's shieldwall.[1]
After the death of his friend and leader, Orwig was left wandering Norway without a cause or goal. He fought many warriors, but none were strong enough to kill him. Due to this, he grew frustrated at his inability to join Ragnar in Valhalla. Eventually, he encountered the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, and issued his challenge as he had done so often already. After a long fight, during which Orwig used two shields, Eivor managed to defeat him, ending his life and fulfilling his final wish.[1]
