An Animus host[1] is the individual whose DNA is the source for the genetic memories relived as a simulation by an Animus user. Under Abstergo Industries' Animus Project, they were called an Animus subject and numbered eighteen in total, including Project Director Aileen Bock as Subject Zero.[2]
Early versions of the Animus required the user to be a descendant of the host;[3] however, technology has since progressed so that there is no longer such limitation.[4] Within the Brahman V.R. framework, the host is called a Witness. Witnesses are in turn classified into Ancestors, who are related to the user, and Echoes, unrelated individuals whose DNA data may be cobbled together via fragmentary genetic sources and Animus algorithms.[5]
