Methoni (Greek: Μεθώνη, Italian: Modone, Venetian: Modon) is a village in Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece.
History
During the Renaissance, Methoni was one of the territories of the Republic of Venice and was known as Modon by the Venetian.[1]
In 1499, the Ottoman Empire defeated Venice during the Battle of Zonchio and sized Modon, Lepanto, and, Corone.[2]
Next year, during the Battle of Modon, the Venetian navy soldier Alvise da Vilandino was tasked with defending the fort of Modon from the Turks. Having drank heavily the night before the battle, Alvise panicked upon hearing cannon fire, stumbled out onto the deck in the midst of the battle and fell over the rail, where he drowned. When it became clear Venice had lost the battle, Alvise was accused of negligence by the ship's captain, who erased him from the logs of the navy.[3]
