Biography

Rise to power

When Savonarola took control of Florence, he assigned nine lieutenants. Each of these lieutenants had his own task, though most of the task were aimed at getting the citizens to follow Savonarola. The merchant witheld food supplies in an attempt to force citizens to follow Savonarola. If the wouldn't oblige, they would soon run out of food.

Death

The merchant was stationed on a ship, and had many guards on the ship patrolling constantly, including two armored guards. Ezio had to make sure he wouldn't draw any attention before he attacked, or the merchant would have a good chance to escape. Ezio quietly killed nearby patrols by dragging them into the water or poisoning them. He then took his chance to leap down on the unsuspecting merchant, thus taking his life.

Speech

We'll see just how tough the holdouts are when they're forced to go without food. If they want to eat, they'll accept Savonarola as their leader. How the Medici family can still hold any sway in this city is beyond me... To think, I once considered them my patrons. But that was before the prophet opened my eyes. Then I saw the evils of commerce and the division it creates. Savonarola will lead us into a new era. One of fraternity, equality, and justice. All that remains is for us to cast off the shackles of our troubled past - and accept the Lord as our saviour and true leader.

Final Words

File:Merchanto.jpg

Merchant: What... What have I done...

Ezio Auditore: You tried to force devotion.

Merchant: Sometimes the people must be told what to think.

Ezio Auditore:No good has ever come of that. Benché il mio cuore sia turbato, la mia mente è lucida (Though my heart may be tormented, my head is clear)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Trivia

  • The Merchant, like many of the other lieutenants, does not reveal his identity.
  • The Merchant talks aloud on the boat before his assassination; and speaks of his intentions to withhold food from the people until they submit to Savonarola's rule, and how Savonarola will lead them into a new era of justice.
  • It appears that the Merchant was once a supporter of the Medici family until Savonarola used the Piece of Eden to make him hate and disgust them.
