Mawei Station (馬嵬驛) was a relay station situated near Xianyang northwest of the Tang capital of Chang'an.[1]
History
On 14 July 756,[1][2][3] the Emperor Xuanzong of Tang fled from Chang'an with his family and his leading officials after the capital was in danger of being overrun by Yan forces led by the rebel An Lushan. Their entourage was escorted by the Army of Dragon Warriors and surviving remnants of the Army of Heavenly Warriors that had escaped the Fall of Tong Pass.
The following day, they arrived at Mawei Station,[2][3] where the Right Chancellor Yang Guozhong convened secretly outside with the Golden Turtles, an organization manipulating the government behind-the-scenes for their own aims. In the midst of plotting to pin their predicament on the crown prince, they were set upon by an Assassin ambush led by the Hidden One Li E. As Guozhong fled back towards the station, crying for help from resting guards, they instead seized upon the opportunity to revolt against him. The ensuing mutiny resulted in not just the death of Guozhong and destruction of the Golden Turtles but the extermination of the Yang family as well. The Emperor's most beloved consort, Yang Guifei, was strangled to death by Gao Lishi at a Buddhist temple in the station.[4][note 1]
