Laureano de Torres y Ayala was born in Havanna Cuba in 1645 to the nobles Tomas Torres y Ayala and Bvira de Quadros Castelanos. Laureano was raised in Madrid Spain, going on to join the Spanish army in his teens and eventually being appointed governor of the Spanish territories in Florida, a post he held 1693-1699. He then returned to Europe to participate in the Spanish war of Succession.

In 1708 Torres was appointed as the Governor of Cuba, a post he held until he was arrested on charges of corruption in 1711. Torres was eventually acquitted of the charges and won a re-election bid in 1713. Torres time in office saw Cuba's defences fortified and its tobacco production begin.

Laureano de Torres y Ayala (1645 – 1722) was the Spanish Governor of Florida from 1693 to 1699, Governor of Cuba on two occasions between 1707 and 1716, and the Grand Master of the Templar Order in the Caribbean.

Torres was later killed by the pirate Edward Kenway in the Observatory, while he attempted to access the First Civilization site.
