Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia. The city lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers in European Russia, and is considered the Sports capital of Russia.
History
During the Russian Revolution, the city became a hotspot in which during the summer, there was an attempt to form an alternative socialist government to the Bolshevik regime.[1] In 1918, the city was taken over by the Czechoslovak Legion. In September, the Red Army under Leon Trotsky would initiate Kazan Operation and retake the city from the Czechs.[2]
Around the same time, the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov travelled to the city with Anastasia Nikolaevna to look for his friend Leon Trotsky to help them contact the Russian Brotherhood. Finding him in his home in the city, Trotsky betrayed Orelov, demanding that he bring the girl to him as she needs to die to support the revolution.[3] Trotsky subsequently imprisoned Orelov in a Cheka barracks in the city. However, he was later freed by Anastasia who managed to find her way through the area.[4]
