Joseon (조선), officially Great Joseon (조선국), was the final kingly regime of Korea. Founded in 1392 by Yi Seong-gye,[1] it ended in 1894 when the ruling dynasty rechristened the state as the Great Korean Empire.[2]
History
From 1592 to 1598, Joseon defended itself against an invasion from the Japanese warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi.[1] Yun Pyeong-Gyu, a Joseon scholar and engineer, had ancestors who fought in the war and were slaughtered. This resulted in a long lasting animosity between two nations and its people onwards.[3]
In 1725, during the reign of King Yeongjo, a Joseon envoy was sent to the Manchu Qing Empire. Yun, who accompanied the envoy, was captured and held prisoner by pirates near the Philippines, until his rescue by the Assassin Edward Kenway.[4] Yun subsequently joined the Assassin's organization, the Zhang Wei Union, in Macau, where he built various weapons and tools for them while looking for a way to return to his homeland.[5]
Following the events at Sun's floating gambling hall that resulted in the slaughter of Shimazu Saito's followers, Edward recruited Saito into the Zhang Wei Union and brought her back to their headquarters. Upon recognising her as a Japanese samurai, Yun deeply objected to Edward's decision, with Zhang telling Edward and John Young of the wars fought between Joseon and the Japanese. While Saito was grateful for being recognised as Japanese unlike her clanmates, Yun told her to shut her mouth and brought up how his ancestors were slaughtered during the Imjin Wars. Eventually, Yun and Saito dropped the animosity during an archery contest and agreed to work together.[5]
