Hyenas are a species of feliform mammals endemic throughout Africa, western Asia, and India.
History
5th century BCE
Hyenas were not native to Greece, but despite this, one of them had made their den within Skandeia Bay on Kythera Island. At the request of Daphnae, the acting leader of the Daughters of Artemis,[1] the Spartan misthios Kassandra hunted down the Krokottas Hyena and slew it.[2]
1st century BCE
In the 1st century BCE, hyena ears were in demand in Egyptian markets. In addtion, Khaliset, a member of the Order of the Ancients who used the Hyena as her cryptonym, used hyenas to do her bidding.[3]
