Hel and Garmr in Helheim

Garmr, or Garm, was a wolf in Norse mythology which was turned into the personal hound of Hel, queen of Niflheimr.

Mythology

Garm was the guardian of the gate to Helheim.[1]

Legacy

During the 870s Eivor experienced visions facilitated by the resident volva influenced by the genetic memories of Havi and her own preconceived notions about Norse mythology. In these visions Havi encountered a letter to Týr from Freyja where she mentioned his wolf Garm getting loose in her garden, eating some unique plants that were not available elsewhere, and partially destroying the garden in the process. She threatened to kill the wolf if she found it anywhere near the garden again.[2]
