The fall of Chang'an was the penultimate event in the An Lushan Rebellion. On 17 July, 756, the jiedushi An Lushan and his Yeluohe army captured the Tang's western capital of Chang'an a few days[1] after Tang Emperor Xuanzong fled the city with his royal entourage of trusted officials, several members of whom were secretly Golden Turtles.[2]

The rebels occupied and plundered the city for three days and nights, killing many citizens within the city walls. An Lushan's admiral Sun Xiaozhe slaughtered many members of the royal family, including the eldest Princess, the Empress, the Prince Consort, and many more at Chongren District in honor of An Lushan's son An Qingzong,[1] who had been executed by the Tang a year earlier.[3]
