Ōta Gyūichi, from the province of Owari, was a warrior of modest beginnings who served under Oda Nobunaga. While he was reputed for his prowess in archery, his primary contributions were in an administrative capacity within Nobunaga's government, notably taking the position of provost (daikan) in the province of Ōmi. He transitioned to the service of Hideyoshi where he was appointed as a commissioner (bugyō) overseen cadastral operations in the Kyoto region. Following Hideyoshi's demise, it appears that he continued his service with the Toyotomi clan.

Ōta Gyūichi's enduring legacy is as the author of the "Shinchō Kōki" (The Chronicle of Nobunaga), a seminal work that offers profound insights into Nobunaga's life. Having lived through the era and accessed administrative records, Gyūichi meticulously chronicled Nobunaga's daily activities. This text is esteemed by historians as an exceptionally reliable source for understanding the period.
